Get Involved

There are lots of ways that members can contribute to the running of the Society and the activities done by the Society. Please contact us for more information about any of the tasks shown below, but do tell us at any time if you would like to do something not listed or would be happy to join the Committee.

Society Secretary:

The job-holder will need to become a committee member / trustee. This job requires regular commitments of time, particularly during the lecture season but somebody happy to job-share would be very welcome. Please ask for a job description.

Museum Garden:

Paddy is looking for somebody to work with her for a year or two with a view to eventually taking over responsibility for the (very beautiful) Museum Garden.

Gunter Mansion:

During August ALHS will have a display about the WW1 Home Front in Abergavenny in Gunter Mansion. We need volunteers to do morning or afternoon sessions in Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays to talk to visitors about the Society (someone else will answer Gunter House questions).

We need someone to keep an eye on the condition of the Blue Plaques and Childrens’ Plaques, and to give then an annual clean.

It would be helpful to have a few more people join the rota for Churchwatch. You would spend 2-3 hours on Wednesday afternoons welcoming visitors to St Mary’s Church. The rota system means your turn will come up 4-6 times a year. You do not need to be a church-attender or an expert on the building as there are lots of notes to refer to for answering visitors’ questions.

Old Hereford Road Cemetery:

The Research Group is currently doing a survey of all the headstones but because the cemetery is so overgrown we need extra people to cut back brambles and ivy to make some headstones accessible and to keep the others clear. The cleared areas could also do with a litter picking session.
